I sit here on the couch. I feel the beginning of a migraine coming on, pounding in my ears. I ignore it and instead, I close my eyes and listen to the all familiar sounds of home. My sister Emily, practices piano, songs from the pride and prejudice soundtrack lilting beautifully through the piano. Sausages sizzle on the stove and the mixer churns pancake batter furiously. From somewhere in the house my brother Ben's voice rises and falls as he excitedly talks about something he's passionate about. My youngest brother sings at the top of his lungs, (not on key) but just because he loves to. Someone rustles through the Lego box trying to build the perfect airplane. Cabinet doors open and close and the coffee pot goes off announcing that the morning has passed and the day is in full swing.
This is the sounds of familiarity. The sounds of my home. I'm thankful for each and every one of those sounds. If I was not here now, away at college, married, or traveling the globe I would not get to be a part of these sounds. I am thankful for where I am, at this time, for this moment.
